Older Workers on A Current Affair

Older workers.

Age discrimination is a very real problem for many Australians desperately trying to re-enter the workforce. But there are many companies who prefer employing mature age people — the trick is knowing who they are. A Current Affair tracks down the age friendly employers.

Age friendly employers include:

Bunnings — the hardware store giant employs 3000 team members who are older than 60 years of age.

Bunnings managing director John Gillam says older workers are often more patient with customers.

The Finishing Touch — the moving and packing company employs more than 2000 workers, and the average age of their employees is 54 years old.

The Finishing Touch owner Susan Williams says older women are better suited to the job because they have more personal experience.

— Other age friendly employers are Woolworths and the Commonwealth Bank.

Shane Higgins has set up a website, olderworkers.com.au, to help older workers find jobs.

Mr Higgins has more than 2000 registered employees looking for older workers and over 14,500 registered job seekers looking for work.
