New Year bonanza for jobs

SCHOOL leavers who haven’t yet made up their mind on a career can relax over the festive season – there will be plenty of jobs on offer in 2011.

Experts predict a jobs bonanza in the tourism, hospitality, construction and manufacturing industries but the retail sector doesn’t hold as much promise.

About 250,000 new jobs are expected to be created in the tourism and hospitality sectors over two years. School leavers, young adults and mature age workers are expected to fill the bulk of them, according to Tourism Training Australia chief executive Bill Galvin.

“The jobs will be found in hotels, motels, restaurants, registered clubs and the new emerging sectors of tourism and hospitality,” he said.

The tourism industry employs more than 1.1 million people in full-time, part-time and casual positions. Mr Galvin expects that of the 250,000 new jobs, about 113,000 will be in NSW.
