Private ADHD TitrationThere is currently a nationwide shortage of medications to treat ADHD symptoms. This is due to manufacturing problems and the growing demand for ADHD medications worldwide.Our service offers private ADHD treatment instead of waiting for NHS funding via Right to Choose. Our assessment fees include the cost of a single prescription.TitrationA highly skilled consultant psychiatrist will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your ADHD. This includes a complete medical history and an evaluation using the standard ADHD questionnaires and rating scales.After your evaluation, you will be informed whether medication is appropriate for your situation. This will be discussed at your follow-up appointment (which could be in person, by video link or over the phone). Your clinician will explain what medication options are available and, if you choose to begin taking medication, we will suggest titrating the dose to optimise the benefits/side effects balance for you.This process can take a few weeks and it involves gradually altering your child’s medication until the appropriate balance is reached. It’s not uncommon to need to titrate several times before determining the most effective one for your child’s ADHD symptoms. It is essential that parents take part in the titration and keep an eye out for their child’s behavior, so they can inform doctors whether the medication is working or causing adverse effects.If you decide to go back to NHS treatment, you will receive an individual prescription for your medication. You will have to pay for your prescription at the pharmacy. This is not included in the consultation fee. You’ll need to attend six-monthly appointments to monitor your medications. This includes pulse and blood pressure measurements. Annual reviews are also required.Follow-up Iam PsychiatryOnce the assessment is completed, you can schedule follow-up appointments with your psychiatrist. The appointment is usually done by video conference using zoom. In some cases, it may be possible for an audio-only consultation to be conducted (again at an additional cost).At this point we will discuss treatment options and agree upon a bespoke individualised ADHD medication titration plan. This will include an assessment of your medication dosage and a discussion around any side effects you might be experiencing. These titration sessions cost PS150 for face-to-face sessions and PS60 via telephone or video consultation. Medication costs are additional and are paid directly to the pharmacy.The psychiatrist will ask you questions regarding your family history as well as the impact of your ADHD symptoms on your daily life and any relationship problems or mental health issues you might be suffering from. This is because ADHD is a genetic condition and it is important to examine any family history that might indicate that you’re at risk of developing the disorder.It is important that you are honest and truthful with your doctor during this evaluation, as the information they receive will be used to determine whether your ADHD fits the diagnostic criteria. We also suggest to check if your GP accepts a “Shared-Care Agreement which means that once you are discharged from the clinic, you will be returned to them for the prescription for the medication.MedicationThe medication process is an essential aspect of the treatment process for many people who are looking for an official ADHD diagnosis. It isn’t easy to obtain a prescription from a psychiatrist on the NHS. NHS waiting lists can be extremely long and GPs may be reluctant to refer their patients to specialist services.Asking your GP to refer through Right to Choose is one way to avoid this (see psychiatry – UK and ADHD 360). This means that you can select a provider that offers a private assessment and titration. This can help you to save time and also be more convenient, especially in the event of a hectic work schedule.If you are referred through this route your chosen doctor will assess you and decide whether or not you’re required to be adjusted on your medication. You’ll need to fill out forms that are different for each provider however the most commonly used ones are self-reporting forms and medical histories dating back to childhood and adulthood. These forms will help your clinician determine if there are reasons that suggest that you shouldn’t be taking ADHD medications, if they have been prescribed.If you are being titrated on medication, it will typically be a combination of stimulants and non-stimulant drugs. These will be carefully trialled and monitored to determine the most suitable combination for you, taking into consideration any current conditions you suffer from. However, for those who require further discussion about their titration and treatment plan it’s possible to be passed back to the private clinic that made their initial assessment. If this happens, the titration appointment will be included in the consultation fees and they will be given their medication through private prescription (see Consultation fees above).
