Job Description
The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) is recruiting for a Library Assistant within the Parliamentary Library.
From this recruitment process the Library will create a merit pool of suitable candidates to fill ongoing and non-ongoing PSL2 positions that might arise over the next 12 months.
The opportunity is within the Digitisation Unit, working with print and online resources to create electronic documents and basic metadata for our collections.
Library Assistants carry out tasks in many areas of the Parliamentary Library and opportunities exist to undertake a range of duties associated with the provision of services to library clients, including collection management, digitisation, data processing and administration.
We are looking for applicants with a strong client focus, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a team. We require flexible, proactive individuals with a willingness to learn new skills.
May require physical capacity to operate manual and electric storage units and to handle archival boxes weighing 4 to 6kg.
The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (Protected/Restricted) security clearance.

Under limited/general direction undertake duties in accordance with the agreed standards for insert classification. The duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Source and acquire collection resources;
- Assist with maintaining the Library’s physical collection, including shelving, weeding and updating loose-leaf services;
- Create or process digital data from print and online sources;
- Create or amend bibliographic metadata;
- Liaise with commercial suppliers, clients and internal staff for the successful delivery of Library products and services;
- Retrieve archival material from onsite storage;
- Contribute to corporate activities as required.
Duties representing highest function: Technical / Service Delivery
- Work in an online environment to help build the Library’s collections and support the research work of the Library (for example, create and maintain library orders and basic bibliographic records).
- Follow directions from your supervisor; where needed, making suggestions for improving the way work is done and checking your own understanding of others comments.
- Work flexibly to meet work objectives and standards;
- Complete tasks accurately and in a timely way to agreed priorities.
- Build and keep positive relationships with team members and provide an excellent client service.
- Other requirements:
(a) May require physical capacity to operate manual and electric storage units and to handle archival boxes weighing 4 to 6kg.
(b) Act in accordance with the Parliamentary Values and Code of Conduct.
