About Nickel West

Nickel West is a fully integrated mine-to-market business. Our culture is rich with technical know-how, highly efficient and focused on innovation. The business employs over 2500 people from five operations across Western Australia comprising of nickel underground and open-cut mines, concentrators, a smelter and a refinery. We also have plans to expand our operations with new mines in the northern Goldfields and a large nickel sulphate plant in Kwinana.

A member of the BHP Group, Nickel West is undergoing an exciting business transformation to become a globally significant supplier of battery materials to the electric vehicle market. Nickel West will soon become the world’s largest producer of Nickel Sulphate, a key ingredient in lithium-ion batteries. As the world’s largest producer of nickel briquettes and nickel powder, Nickel West is leading the new-energy revolution in Western Australia.

The mining operations are located approximately 400km north of Kalgoorlie at Leinster and Mt Keith. Leinster has both underground and small open pit operations, with the underground running block cave, sub level cave and long hole open stopping operations. Mt Keith is both underground and open pits with the open pit being large scale at circa 100-150Mtpa material movement.

About the Role

We are currently seeking an experienced Mining Professional with studies experience to join the Nickel West team in the capacity of Manager – Mining Studies and Technical.

Reporting to the General Manager, Northern Operations, this is an exciting opportunity for a high performing individual to work with a range of diverse stakeholders and make a significant contribution to Nickel West’s future operations.

Driving performance through culture, diligence and process whilst creating a work environment that values diversity and inclusion, you will lead an efficient, effective and capable team made up of Studies Leads, Project Schedulers and technical experts.

Key to your success will be your ability to manage, prioritise and execute studies in line with BHP’s Charter Values, investment process and requirements and statutory obligations whilst maintaining an overriding commitment to Health, Safety & Environment.

Key experience and attributes will include:

  • Operational leadership roles in underground and/or open pit mines
  • Demonstrated success in a similar role would be highly regarded however this could also be a great opportunity for the right individual to step into a Manager level position
  • Demonstrated experience and results leading cross-functional teams along with mature engagement, communication and influencing skills
  • Developing and implementing processes and systems centred upon study work
  • Exposure and experience in pursuing statutory approvals for new developments

Mining studies will be predominantly brownfields looking at mine expansions but also include small greenfield mine developments as additional satellite deposits are assessed.

An opportunity also exists for this person to play a leading role in negotiating indigenous land use agreements as new developments may require.

You will be working in a proactive and supportive business culture and you will have the chance to promote business excellence through your team.

About You

You will have achieved a higher education qualification, preferably combined with post-graduate study in an engineering, finance or project management related discipline. With previous exposure in a similar role, you will have built strong analytical and communication skills as well as the ability to distil your analysis to support executive decision-making.

An experienced professional with a passion for guiding, developing and influencing teams and individuals, you will bring a strong understanding of a project’s life-cycle to deliver safe, capital-efficient and sustainable operational outcomes.

Performance and achievement orientated, you work well under pressure, bringing a high attention to detail and the consistent ability to meet deadlines. Your technical strengths will be complimented by excellent engagement and communication skills. Proactive, credible and influential, you relate well with people, communicating confidently and building strong working relationships with key stakeholders.

You will be based in Perth, Western Australia, in the multi award winning office tower – ‘City Square’. You will have stunning river views from your modern, open plan office which hosts state of the art facilities including modern video conferencing and meeting facilities, private and breakout meeting facilities, a modern and secure crèche, 550 bicycle racks with ample lockers, showers and change room amenities and a large outdoor terrace with barbecues.

Occasional travel to site is required.
